PGMA Member Nook & Scranny Makes its Mark in Tarbert

At PGMA, we take immense pride in watching our members grow. One recent highlight is the incredible transformation of Nook & Scranny in Tarbert, Isle of Harris.

Owners Graham Kay and Laura Burt have recently turned a 35-year-old local newsagents into a vibrant, multi-faceted business. By combining a boutique guesthouse with a premium convenience store and deli, they have created something truly unique for the community. With the help of a £25,000 loan from the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme, the duo installed a professional chef’s counter to showcase Laura’s culinary expertise.

From Buddha bowls and fresh pastries to homemade ice cream, Nook & Scranny is quickly becoming the go-to destination for both locals and tourists seeking high-quality, healthy food.

It is fantastic to see independent retailers diversify and grow in this way. Graham and Laura bring extensive experience from the hospitality sector to the island, and their impact is already being seen, Nook & Scranny is even set to cater the famous HebCelt music festival this July.

We are proud to support Graham and Laura as they compete at the highest level while maintaining their unique local identity. Through their partnership with PGMA, they have been able to integrate professional tools, premium product labels, and streamlined distribution into their daily operations, allowing them to focus on what they do best, delivering an exceptional experience to their customers.

The end result is a high-quality, welcoming space that strengthens both the local economy and the community in Tarbert. We look forward to supporting Nook & Scranny as they continue to grow.
